When it comes to how much social acceptance there is for people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, nonbinary or transgender in the U.S. today, LGBTQ adults see the most acceptance for those who are gay or lesbian. Over recent decades, studies have shown that American society has grown more welcoming or accepting to members of this community, however discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender.

This report describes updates to the LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or intersex) Global Acceptance Index (GAI), which seeks to aceeptence gay the relative level of acceptance of LGBTI people and issues in each country for a specific time period. Fewer than four in 10 Americans said they were satisfied with acceptance of transgender people, the survey found: 38% of respondents expressed satisfaction and 50% said they were dissatisfied.

Acceptance of gay and aceeptence of gay people has grown substantially in the United States sinceaccording to a nationwide survey conducted by the NORC at the University of Chicago for the Los Angeles Times. Acceptance of transgender and nonbinary people is lower on a number of measures. Using an advanced statistical model, the author updated the Global Acceptance Index to measure acceptance in countries and geographic locations.
